Gluten Free Food Nottingham – Samantha Burke

Gluten Free Food NottinghamExplain you business in under 50 words.

I produce and sell Gluten Free Food in Nottingham: Cakes, Breads, Event Catering, Platters and Home Cooked Food. I sell to businesses and the public.

Why did you start your business?

I started Gluten Free Food Nottingham because I am coeliac and cannot eat gluten.  I enjoy cooking and want to provide food that is SAFE for coeliacs to eat.

What makes you different from your competitors?

I’m different to my competitors because I can cook to order such a wide range of food products which can be delivered fresh the same day or next.  Everything is produced in Nottingham and delivered locally.

What has been the biggest challenge so far?

The biggest challenge so far is dealing with my own health whilst working.  I get tired which limits what I can do.

What is the one thing you wish you had known when you started?

The one thing I wish I knew more of before I started was dealing with money, pricing and accounts. In a nutshell, I wish I had learnt maths at school that related to real life.  I would have become self employed much sooner if I had.

Is their one thing you wish you had not done?

The only thing that I wish I had not done is wait so long to do this!!

Pick a tool, service or resource essential to your success?

I’m my biggest resource! I have years of experience working in offices in admin, customer services, accounts, I have a degree in fashion design, I’ve organised events.  Everything that I have learnt previously comes in to use with running my business, never discount any of your experiences because they will all come in useful.

Where do you see your business in 10 years?

In 10 years I would like to have several arms to my business including a Gluten Free bakery, shop, restaurant/cafe and food stalls… and who knows what else by then!

What top tip would you give to someone thinking of starting their own business?

Writing a business plan really helps you to focus and get your ideas on paper.  I was cynical about this but it really helped. After that, just dive right in.  Don’t plan too much and don’t worry, work hard and enjoy what you do.  Make sure you give yourself time off. Find other people who are self employed – it’s wonderful to have the company and support of others going through the same things as you and to help them too.
